Memorie di carta
- 2020 São Paulo
Erminio Pivetti was born in São Paulo in 1903 from an Italian family who had emigrated to Brazil and then returned to Europe after the Great War. He was my paternal grandmother’s father but she did not like to talk much about her childhood and the origins of the family. For this reason no one has ever managed to understand what had happened to them in Brazil during those years but I have always tried to imagine and reconstruct it in my memory even if those moments and stories did not belong to me. With the few information available, I worked out counter-memories related to his story, filling the missing pieces with my imagination. These fictitious memories are still a part of me and have pushed me to undertake the same journey my ancestors made to Brazil, to enrich them with details. However, unable to find information closely related to the origins of my great-grandfather, I started collecting old photographs in the second-hand market in Bixiga, the ‘Italian district’ of São Paulo, in order to restore a materiality to those memories created in my childhood. And so, the photographs abandoned by someone who has been forgotten or who wanted to forget ended up in the hands of a person who, on the contrary, wants to remember. Through this process, I was able to reconnect to my roots and develop a visual document after my great-grandfather’s Brazilian origins, mixing material found in São Paulo and images taken during my stay with photos from my family albums, creating a time collision between present and past. A Doc-Fiction family tale.
